Yosemite father-son mountaineering and more

By Brian Irwin

Andy Irwin, 13, and I just returned from Yosemite.  We had a fabulous experience.  The valley is so congested in the summer that we limited our time there to an afternoon.  Later we explored the Sequoias in Mariposa Grove, Glacier Point, and then headed to the backcountry via Tuolumne.  We hiked 7.1 miles into the High Sierra Vogelsang Camp and spent two nights there at almost 11,000 feet.  Our second day was spent summiting the trailess mountaineering objective, Vogelsang Peak.  We were only the second party this year up this very rarely climbed peak which sits at 11,500 feet.  Andy did a spectacular job. And we topped it off with oysters at San Fransico’s Pier 39.  A time to cherish and remember forever for both of us.
