Darcie and I just returned from an expedition to Kenya. Benson Njoroge was our outfitter and was excellent, from pickup to departure. He assembled a team of porters and cooks and guided us from the east gate of Mt. Kenya National Park, up the Chogori Route, over 5,000m Point Lenana (one of Mt. Kenya’s three peaks) and down the Sirimon Route. This traverse of the entire national park took five days and all camping details were tended to with perfection. The Dr. Seussean landscape was striking as we ascended and descended almost 8,000 feet through five ecosystems.

Benson (bennjoro2001@yahoo.com) is also an incredibly honest, safe and spiritual man. He’s a pastor, who officiated our vows on the summit. After we descended we holed up in Nanyuki at a nice resort and spent time exploring the Oj Pejeta Conservancy, home to the big five game species, but also the home to the last two Northern White Rhinos on earth. Hunted to near-extinction, both are female and are undergoing IVF in a race to save the species that will be gone if unsuccessful. We touched these majestic creatures, and on that day eggs were harvested from one and flown immediately to Italy for fertilization with male samples from the now-deceased last male rhinos. A terrible reminder of human damage to fragile ecosystems.

We finished with a traverse of Aberdare National Park, home to Kenya’s highest waterfall at 300m. Then to Nairobi for a last meal at the ever-famous Carnivore. In all, an unforgettable journey that led to enhanced understanding of that part of the world, humanity, personal challenge and forever commitment to my wife.
