We just emerged from an amazing trek in Peru’s most remote mountain range, the Cordillera Huayhuash. Fifty miles, four passes up to almost 16,000 feet and sweeping views everywhere. We were supported by our outfitter, Colonia Adventures out of Huaraz. These folks not only arrange a tight, perfect itinerary, they are also old friends and have been guiding in Peru for decades. The matriarch, Maruja, has parents who literally opened this part of Peru to guided parties. Gilf, our guide, was much more. A naturalist and guide of thirty years, we were fortunate to have him lead us. We witnessed soaring condors, prancing vicuna llamas and thundering glaciers. We spent the night watching the sun go down behind Siula Grande, home of the incident made famous by the book and movie Touching The Void. Darcie Shipman is the best travel partner and it was like being in another world to share this with her.
